Valgrande-Pajares and Fuentes de Invierno will announce this week whether they are opening their doors to skiers this Thursday, November 27.
These two winter resorts have accumulated snow from recent abundant precipitation, allowing technical staff to prepare slopes for an immediate opening, pending mountain team approval. The goal is to open this Thursday.
If successful, they will not only precede other ski resorts in the country — unless any anticipate their opening at the last minute — but also meet their scheduled calendar. It is worth noting that it has been four years since either resort managed to open on the officially marked date.
Nevertheless, the situation is not identical at both resorts. At Fuentes de Invierno, management remains stable under RECREA — operated by Cara Norte Ingenieros since 2019 — which has enabled agile work. As soon as snow depths allowed last Thursday, machines accessed the slopes to compact the fresh snow. Additionally, parking areas have been cleared to accumulate snow and then reposition it at key points within the ski area.
These efforts help reinforce slope conditions, though they do not replace a dedicated snowmaking system. A first snow cannon arrived last year for testing and can become operational this winter. A qualitative leap will require the installation of more units, although the electrification, promised for years from the neighboring San Isidro resort — separated by barely eighty meters in some sections — is essential beforehand.
At Valgrande-Pajares, however, issues with technical management have complicated the season's start. Just days before a potential opening, lifts were still awaiting inspection, a delay that adds uncertainty to the definitive start date.
For now, the only official news is the pricing for the Asturian winter resorts, which remains frozen for the sixth consecutive year. The price of combined season passes for Valgrande-Pajares and Fuentes de Invierno ranges from 35 euros for the pre-infant category to 298 euros for an adult pass. Additionally, discounts have been applied for those who purchase them before the 21st of this month. Multi-day passes, offering a reduced price compared to the daily pass, will also be available.
