Avalanche in Baqueira Claims Skier's Life

On Sunday afternoon, an avalanche occurred at the Baqueira Beret ski resort, trapping a skier. Emergency teams, comprising Pompièrs d’Aran and the mountain unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra, successfully rescued the individual, who was in cardiac arrest.

Upon arrival at the slide site, emergency services located the skier in critical condition, immediately activating the rescue operation. The victim was urgently evacuated to Hospital de Vielha, where, despite resuscitation efforts, medical personnel could not reverse his condition and pronounced his death.

According to TV3, the skier reportedly accessed the area via the Dossau chairlift to descend an itinerary marked as off-piste towards Montgarri.

The alert was raised by a mountain guide in the area, and the accident occurred in the Beret sector. Following the initial rescue, emergency teams maintained a search operation for the possible presence of a second skier, after personnel located a pair of skis in the avalanche-affected area.

Initial reports indicated two people involved. However, Pompièrs d’Aran later clarified that only one skier had been rescued and that the existence of a second affected person is a possibility, derived solely from the equipment found in the slide zone.

The search for a possible second companion, who might remain buried under the snow, had to be suspended Sunday night. Location efforts resumed today, Monday, at daybreak and are ongoing, awaiting confirmation of the search results.
