Benasque's New Gondola: Direct Connection, Energy Efficiency, and Year-Round Tourism Development Benasque takes a leap with its new gondola lift: direct connection, energy efficiency, and year-round tourism development.
The high Pyrenean mountains are poised for a qualitative leap in their model of mobility and development. In the Benasque Valley, construction is underway for a new 10-person gondola lift connecting the town of Benasque with the Cerler ski resort. The objective is clear: to boost tourism development in the region, both during the winter season and throughout the year.
The infrastructure, promoted by the operator LEITNER and supported by local administration, will be one of the most significant projects. The new 10-person gondola will improve private traffic in a sustainable manner, enhancing the quality of life for residents, and boosting tourism development.
This project, signed in January with construction already underway, will involve an investment of 13 million euros.
The new lift will feature 53 Diamond EVO cabins equipped with ski racks and internal bicycle holders, allowing for use outside the snow season. Transport capacity will reach 2,400 people per hour, with a journey connecting Benasque and Cerler in under 6 minutes, at a maximum speed of 6 m/s.
In a valley heavily dependent on tourism, this represents a strategic improvement for the local transport model, reducing car dependency and enhancing the visitor experience.
One of the project's most notable aspects is its commitment to sustainability. The installation will operate with LEITNER's DirectDrive system, gearless, quieter, more efficient, and with lower energy consumption. It will be powered by four LeitDrive frequency converters, ensuring optimized control and reduced environmental impact.
Thus, the region aims not only to reduce emissions in the short term but also to reinforce its image as a destination advancing towards sustainable mobility, in a context where mountain tourism faces increasing demands in terms of environmental impact and climate adaptation.
The Mayor of Benasque, Manuel Mora Bernat, summarizes it thus:
"In LEITNER, we have found a collaborator who combines the highest technological quality with a strong commitment to sustainability. The new gondola is a pioneering project for our region: it will help alleviate traffic, protect the environment, and will be implemented quickly and efficiently."
