En su primer ensayo riguroso de 'snowfarming', el emblemático resort de las Rocosas desafía las temperaturas estivales y retiene la mayor parte de sus reservas para el inicio de la temporada.
In a scenario where the management of snow resources defines the future of high-end skiing, Aspen Snowmass has taken a decisive step towards technical advancement. The Colorado resort has completed its first snowfarming pilot project with exceptional results: the preservation of nearly 85% of the snow volume stored at the close of the winter season, remaining intact through the warmest months of the year.

The Science of Safeguarding the White Mantle
Far from being an improvised experiment, the technique of snowfarming constitutes a discipline of thermodynamic precision and topographical planning. During months of maximum accumulation, machines pack and compact large snow depots in selected mountain orientations, minimizing the surface area exposed to solar radiation.
Subsequently, these mounds are protected by high-tech geotextile blankets combined with natural insulating layers. This covering reflects ultraviolet radiation and insulates the core of the frozen mass, drastically mitigating the effects of warm air convection and summer precipitation.
“Strategic snow storage transforms autumn's uncertainty into a solid, sustainable foundation for the start of winter.”
Energy Efficiency and Season Guarantee
The balance achieved in Aspen not only confirms the method's viability at Colorado's altitudes but redefines the resort's operational protocols. Having this preserved volume offers key advantages for domain management:
Guaranteed Opening: Allows for conditioning key slopes and critical sectors before the first autumn storms.
Reduced Energy Footprint: Decreases reliance on artificial snowmaking systems at the beginning of the season, when marginal temperatures demand greater electricity and water consumption.
Soil Protection: The spreading of a consolidated layer prevents terrain erosion during the first interventions by slope machinery.
With this trial, Aspen consolidates its position as a benchmark in reconciling excellent skiing with bioclimatic adaptation, demonstrating that the preservation of white heritage depends as much on respect for the environment as on technical ingenuity.
