Heli-Skiing in Canada

From Buenos Aires, New Jersey, or Calgary, they left their homes, partners, and children to experience something different. Instead of shops, spas, or shopping, they chose a helicopter, a remote mountain, and untouched snow. A story that is more than an alpine anecdote: it is an ode to friendship, freedom, and female courage in uncharted territory.

Dressed in bright parkas, overpacked, and exuding contagious energy, they stepped onto the helipad as if it were a catwalk. They left behind their partners, children, and routines. Some met on the bus from Calgary airport, others moments before. In less than three hours, they were already sharing their stories, their lives, and most importantly, their passion for skiing. Ellen Slaughter, their host, christened them with a smile: “Chicks in Choppers.”

The Enclave

The Adamant Lodge, hidden amidst British Columbia's Selkirk Mountains, would be their base. From there, each morning, helicopters took off with four skiers and two guides aboard, heading to pristine glaciers where there are no tracks, only intuition and technique. There, the snow is light as powder, perfect for floating, ideal for those seeking to ski beyond limits.

Canadians, Americans, an Argentinian, a Brit. From 26 to 51 years old. Businesswomen, mothers, cyclists, real estate agents. They were united by the desire to experience something different. Silvana, who flew alone from Buenos Aires after years of failing to convince her husband. Brett, used to skiing with her brother but eager to do so with other women. Kate, the youngest, who found inspiration in those who had lived far more than just descents.

The Experience

Guided by expert Alison Andrews and supported by the attentive Jeff Bodnarchuk, they faced physical and emotional challenges: seven hours daily in virgin snow, brief helicopter jumps, turns over glaciers, and a fatigue that dissolved with laughter, thermal baths, and wine at the end of the day. Not all endured the same. Some returned earlier. Others gave their all until the last descent.

The Bond

Between descents and jokes, something stronger than the snow around them emerged: complicity. They shared jokes, tricks, fears, and even basic needs without reservation. When nature called, they organized themselves into lines for open-air peeing, forcing the male guides to look away. The snow was not just the terrain; it was the stage where each, in her own way, reconnected with herself.

The Rest

After each day, the lodge beds, massages, and dinners at communal tables were the perfect culmination. With a glass of wine in hand and quadriceps pushed to their limit, they discussed technique, scares, and the beauty of the day. All while outside, in the darkness, elk and eagles guarded a territory where only the wind can be heard.

Would they do it again? All of them. Shauna, the comedian, was already planning to return. Silvana wanted to bring her husband. Brett was looking for a mixed experience. Kate, still processing what she had lived through, understood that she had learned more about life than about skiing. Because among helicopters, mountains, and laughter, they realized that this adventure was not just a getaway; it was a conquest. And they, undoubtedly, are also making history on the snow.
