French skier, Paco Rassat, and American skier, Mikaela Shiffrin, are crowned the latest Gurgl slalom winners.
The weekend saw two demonstrations of opposing, yet equally significant, nature on the Alpine Ski World Cup circuit. On one hand, Frenchman Paco Rassat delivered the big surprise in the Gurgl slalom, achieving the first victory of his career after a spectacular comeback. On the other, American Mikaela Shiffrin reasserted herself as the undeniable master of technical skiing with another triumph in Hochgurgl.
Rassat stopped the clock with a total time of 1:44.55, a result that allowed him to climb from the fourteenth position obtained in the first run. His second run, marked by aggression and control on a particularly demanding course, was key to a victory built on risk and precision.
The race was decided by minimal margins. Belgian Armand Marchant placed second, just 0.07 seconds behind, also securing Belgium's first-ever podium in the Alpine Ski World Cup. Third was Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath, only 0.09 seconds behind the winner, completing a compressed and highly competitive podium. The top 5 were rounded out by Timon Haugan and Tanguy Nef, in a race marked by equality and changing course conditions.
With this triumph, Rassat makes a substantial leap in the slalom standings and consolidates himself as a name to watch at the start of the season, after having secured a sixth-place finish in the Levi opener.
In the women's category, the day in Hochgurgl was once again defined by the authority of Mikaela Shiffrin, who achieved her 103rd World Cup victory. The American thus secures her second consecutive triumph in the technical events of this early campaign.
Shiffrin made a difference from the first run, where she recorded a time of 54.22 seconds that clearly put her above the rest of the competitors. In the second run, she once again imposed her characteristic style—a combination of surgical precision and sustained speed—to close her performance with 1:48.11, well ahead of the rest of the podium.
With this new success, the skier reaffirms her status as a favorite to revalidate the Crystal Globe in the technical disciplines and extends a sporting career that continues to set new milestones at a pace her rivals seem unable to match.
