The international ski community bids farewell to French athlete Juliette Willmann, 29, victim of an avalanche on Mount Crestón, in the vicinity of El Chaltén.

The world of high-mountain skiing and international freeride is in mourning. French athlete Juliette Willmann, one of the most respected and charismatic figures in contemporary alpine discipline, has passed away at 29 years old due to an avalanche while exploring Patagonian slopes in Argentina.

The tragic event occurred on cerro Crestón, a prominent peak located near El Chaltén. This enclave in the Austral Andes periodically gathers elite skiers and alpinists attracted by its complex lines, wild snow, and challenging orography. According to initial reports, a snow slab detached during a day of off-piste skiing, fatally trapping the French athlete.

A career marked by technique and elegance

Originally from the French Alps and initially trained in traditional alpine skiing, Willmann consolidated her career on the international stage thanks to impeccable progression on steep slopes. Her talent led her to compete in the elite Freeride World Tour (FWT), where she stood out for refined technique, great solidity on steep terrain, and fluid, natural line reading.

Beyond bibs and podiums, Juliette embodied the essential values of exploration skiing. Through remote expeditions and cinematic projects, she dedicated her final years to documenting the raw beauty of the planet's most demanding massifs, inspiring a new generation of women skiers.

«Big mountain skiing demands an absolute connection with the terrain: a mix of technical audacity and permanent humility before the force of the elements.»

Consternation in the alpine community

The news has deeply impacted athletes, guides, federations, and enthusiasts worldwide. Condolences have poured in unanimously, remembering Willmann not only for her extraordinary skill on skis but also for her personal warmth, constant smile, and unconditional devotion to mountain culture.

Juliette Willmann's premature departure leaves an indelible mark on global freeride, once again reminding us of the fragile border between the absolute freedom offered by pristine terrain and the inherent risks of high winter mountains.
