Skiers Seize Early Autumn Snowfall in the Pyrenees Before Temperature Surge

Numerous ski enthusiasts took advantage of the weekend to try out the snow at resorts such as Ordino Arcalís, Baqueira Beret, Port del Comte and in several areas of the French Pyrenees, among others. However, weather forecasts anticipate a rise in temperatures in the coming days—typical of the aforementioned Indian summer—which could hinder resorts’ plans for an early opening.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts a generalized thermal increase for this week, accompanied by atmospheric stability and scarce precipitation at the low and mid-altitudes of the Pyrenees. This temperature rebound will notably affect the continuity and quality of the snowpack, especially in areas where skiing had already been possible on an occasional basis.

Meteorologists remind us that early snowfalls in October and November are usually intermittent, and subsequent temperature rises can lead to rain at low altitudes, compaction and rapid loss of snow on sunny slopes, circumstances that usually force the season’s start to be postponed until more stable and sustainable weather conditions are established.

Meanwhile, resort operators maintain their indicative calendars for the start of the season towards the end of November or around the Constitution Bridge holiday. Baqueira Beret, for example, maintains its opening forecast for the end of the month, subject to weather conditions, while similar plans are being managed within the Aramón group for the main domains of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Although snow at high altitudes allows for mountain activities and spectacular landscapes, the safety and quality of the snowpack are decisive factors before opening to the public. Resorts require homogeneous minimum depths, good condition of lifts, and full functionality of services, indispensable conditions before confirming an official opening.
