With sun, heat, and tourists booming, Swiss cable cars are experiencing a record summer in 2025, boosting mountain tourism like never before.
After a rainy start to 2024, the 2025 summer season has begun with significantly higher figures for the Swiss cable car industry. According to data compiled by the Swiss Cable Car Industry Association (SBS), first-time registrations increased by 24% compared to the previous year, and by 56% when compared to the average of the last five years.
May showed early signs of improvement, despite some unstable days. June, however, was decisive: hot, dry, and with plenty of sunshine, in contrast to the previous year's storms. This change attracted both local visitors and tourists from neighboring countries, especially for day trips.
Return of domestic tourism
In the first two months of the season, the number of Swiss visitors increased by 30%. In Graubünden, where domestic tourism predominates, growth reached 63%, also favored by an improvement in railway transport services. International tourism also showed signs of recovery, with a 19% increase compared to 2024.
Positive outlook for the alpine summer
"Summer in the mountains is booming, and resorts are investing heavily in offering a quality product," says Berno Stoffel, director of Swiss Cable Cars. From gastronomic experiences and panoramic views to sports like hiking, climbing, or cycling, the alpine environment is consolidating itself as a complete destination also in the warmer months.
The commitment to active and diverse summer tourism appears to be paying off. And in 2025, the figures confirm it.
