The HBO Series That Could Bring Mountain Culture to the Mainstream

Some stories only happen on a mountain. Friendships forged during a winter season, jobs that start as temporary and end up becoming a way of life, small towns changing too quickly, and the constant tension between preserving their identity or embracing progress.

This is precisely what Lifties, the new comedy in development for HBO created by Jimmy Tatro alongside screenwriter Dan Lagana, seems to want to explore.

The premise is recognizable to anyone who has spent time at a ski resort: four friends live and work on a mountain dedicated to snowboarding when a large company, inspired by major models that have transformed the industry over the last decade, acquires the resort and begins a transformation process that threatens to change everything.

Beyond comedy, Lifties brings to the table some of the most relevant conversations in the contemporary alpine world. The growing corporatization of resorts, the gentrification of mountain towns, the rising cost of living, and the progressive loss of specific local cultures are issues that are part of the current debate in numerous winter destinations around the world.

It is no coincidence that the protagonists of the story are lifties. They often best represent the authentic spirit of a resort: those who know every corner of the mountain, who experience winter seasons from within, and who are part of that particular community that makes certain places much more than just a tourist destination.

Jimmy Tatro is also no newcomer to the snowboarding universe. The American actor and comedian, known for his internet work and the series The Real Bros of Simi Valley, is a snowboarder and has actively participated in events linked to the culture of this sport in recent years.

The project will also feature production by A24, the studio responsible for some of the most interesting productions in contemporary cinema, while Tatro will serve as lead actor, writer, and executive producer alongside Dan Lagana.

As of now, HBO has not confirmed its release date, and the series is still awaiting final approval, so details about the cast or official images of the project are not yet known.

The most interesting aspect of Lifties is what it represents. For decades, snow culture has found its great stories in cult films, independent documentaries, and productions created from within the industry. It has rarely occupied a prominent place on major audiovisual platforms.

If it succeeds in capturing the humor, contradictions, and particular way of life that exists around mountains, Lifties could become one of the first series capable of bringing this culture to a wider audience.
