Where to Ski This Summer: Val d'Isère, Open Until July

While other glaciers close, Val d’Isère opens its doors to summer skiing on the legendary Pisaillas glacier. Discover where snow remains alive in mid-June.

While most skiers store their equipment until next winter, a corner of the French Alps defies the seasons. Val d’Isère, a jewel of Alpine skiing, opened its summer season on June 7th with exclusive access to the Pisaillas glacier, allowing skiing at over 3,000 meters altitude under the summer sun.

The French resort will offer skiing for four weeks, until July 6th (weather permitting), on three slopes open to the public between 3,300 and 2,725 meters altitude. Another four slopes are reserved for training by competitive teams, continuing a tradition that dates back to the late 1960s.

According to Steve Angus, a regular in Val d’Isère, "we've had some fresh snow up there today and also overnight," news welcomed by skiers and coaches eager to make the most of every meter of glacier.

The glacier's base features open ticket offices and the Cascade restaurant for visitors, consolidating a high-mountain summer experience that combines sport, sun, and spectacular views.

Neighboring resort Tignes is also preparing its summer season, from June 21st to July 20th, on the Grande Motte glacier, with up to 20 km of slopes between 3,456 and 2,724 meters altitude.

Across the rest of the Alps, only five glacier ski areas remain active: Hintertux in Austria, Les 2 Alpes and Val d’Isère in France, and Passo Stelvio and Cervinia (shared with Zermatt) in Italy and Switzerland, respectively. Mölltal, in Austria, definitively closed its season last weekend due to adverse weather conditions.

Beyond Europe, summer skiing is also underway in Norway, with Galdhøpiggen and Stryn open, while in the Southern Hemisphere, resorts like Mt Hutt in New Zealand and Portillo in Chile are beginning their seasons with promising snow.
